When I give a clinic on free throw shooting, I begin by telling the players, “a free throw is a gift.” Free throws have brought me many gifts, and a lot of enjoyment. The greatest gift is that I’ve discovered a new chapter in my life. I ran into Lou Chavez recently, the guy who was in the gym the first day I started shooting. He said, “You’ve come a long way, man. Your arms and legs have good muscle tone, your color is good. What’s your secret?” The secret is, when you find something you love doing, the years drop away. And when I share my love of basketball, I can overcome any age or cultural difference. For me, basketball is a universal language.
